Christopher Stevers (1990-95, men's baseball)
What makes you most proud to be a Zip?
The people I’ve met during my time at Akron. I'm still close with 30-40 teammates and fellow athletes.
How are you and your family doing during this time?
Just grinding. Keeping busy around the house and of course Netflix.
Any messages of hope or inspiration for fellow Zips out there during our current stay-at-home orders?
Just stay the course. Light is at the end of the tunnel.
Do you have any work from home tips that you have learned while quarantined?
Yes....my kids hate leftovers! Lol
What is your current job, title, ect. that are keeping you busy these days?
Retired.
What was/were the deciding factors(s) that brought you to Akron?
Opportunity to play Division 1 athletics, beautiful campus and very close to home.
What was/were your first impression(s) of Akron?
Wow! There’s a lot of students here.
What makes being a student-athlete at Akron unique?
Folks do not realize the percentage of college students that get to participate in athletics. The number is tiny. I'm very proud to be part of that group.
What are your favorite memories on court, field, etc.?
Earning the win against number 1 seed Bowling Green in the MAC tourney my senior year.
One of the best aspects of being a student-athlete is teammate camaraderie. Give us an example from your experience as a student-athlete.
Like I stated earlier, you make lifelong friends because of the camaraderie and reliance on teammates.
What is your personal success story?
My career as a Cleveland Police Officer. I know I’ve made a positive difference in my community!.
What is it that you have learned from being a student-athlete at Akron that you will use throughout your life after graduation?
You are never alone. Someone always has your back no matter how tough times can get.
How has being a student-athlete at Akron aided in your personal development?
Organization. Being a student-athlete, you have to be organized. Balancing your commitment to academics and athletics wasn’t an easy thing to do. But you learn to adapt and it’s paramount in everyday life.
Being a student-athlete requires a lot of time management. How have you learned to do so?
Busy your butt early, so you can enjoy the spoils later.
What is your view on the difference between playing and competing?
Anyone can play. True athletes with the will to win compete.
Being a student-athlete has high physical demands, but also requires mental toughness as well. What have you done to develop both?
I think being part of a team eases those demands. You know you can always rely on your family. Mentally, you experience times when you need to grind. It’s kinda sink or swim.....dealing with those situations in college helps build a foundation of mental toughness.
