Garretson Named First-Team Academic All-American by CSC

AUSTIN, Texas - University of Akron track and field redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) garnered recognition for his efforts in the classroom with his selection as a 2023 Academic All-America® Division I Track and Field/Cross Country recipient, as chosen by the College Sports Communicators (CSC), it was announced on Thursday.
Garretson became the first Akron men's track and field student-athlete to be tabbed as a First-Team All-American honoree as recognized by CSC since the program's inception.
Garretson joins Olympian Matt Ludwig (2019-second team) as the second Zip men's track and field standout to be honored as CSC Academic All-America recipients.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable).
Majoring in mathematics, Garretson boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Zips. A three-time All-America honoree, Garretson capped his 2023 campaign capturing First-Team All-America accolades with a runner-up finish in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas on June 7 with a competition-leading clearance of 18-8.25 (5.70m).

An NCAA East Preliminary Round qualifier, Garretson won his fifth overall and fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference title this spring. He posted the top mark in seven meets this season, including NCAA Championships and went above 5.50m outdoors five times in 2023.

A five-time Mid-American Conference Champion, four-time Academic All-MAC selection and USTFCCCA Academic All-America recipient, Garretson registered a career-best clearance of 18-8.75 (5.71m) at Texas Relays in April after collecting All-America and NCAA Elite 90 accolades during the indoor campaign.
