JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Akron Track and Field junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) registered a career-best mark of 42-2.75 (12.87m) in the women's triple jump to headline the Zips' efforts on the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round hosted by North Florida on Saturday, May 29.
Pokuaah's performance equaled the No. 2 effort in outdoor program history and bettered her previous career-best mark of 41-0.50 (12.51) set on May 8 at the Mid-American Conference Championships.
"We had twenty-two shots this week to get a ticket to the show," Akron head coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "Despite our athletes giving their heart and souls to the effort, we just couldn't get over the barrier. Unfortunately, this ends a very long streak of going to and scoring at nationals. It was a great run that we had. Akron can hold its head up high with the accomplishments it has had over the years and what we were able to accomplish this year. I am so proud of our athletes and I look forward to many of them doing some big things in the coming years."
The meet, which invites the region's top 48 athletes in each event, served as the opening round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The top-12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., from June 9-12. The NCAA West prelims are being held in College Station, Texas, at the same time.
