MAC TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK RELEASE
CLEVELAND, Ohio – University of Akron track and field juniors Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) were recognized by the Mid-American Conference as the Men's Track and Women's Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, April 28.
Pokuaah and Willis are the third and fourth Zips to earn weekly league honors during the outdoor campaign in 2021, joining junior William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) (April 21), redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (April 7) and Willis (April 21).
Willis turned in a stellar weekend for the Zips at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational registering the fastest times this season in the MAC in the 100 and 200 meters, crossing the line in 10.35 and 20.69, respectively. He posted the No. 4 time in Akron outdoor program history to cross the line fifth in the men's 200 meters in 20.69, while also placing fifth in the men's 100 meters in a time of 10.35.
He currently owns the No. 29 mark in the NCAA this season in the 200 meters, while rating 52nd nationally in the 100 meters.
Pokuaah turned in a trio of career-best performances at the LSU Alumni Gold Invitational with her efforts in the long jump (20-3/6.17m) and triple jump (39-10/12.14m), while also running the 200 meters (25.30).
She placed fifth in the long jump equaling a career-best mark of 20-3 (6.17m), the No. 5 mark in Akron outdoor program history. She also finished eighth in the women's triple jump with a career-best mark of 39-10 (12.14m).
Akron will have athletes competing at the Mountaineer Twilight hosted by West Virginia on Saturday, May 1. The competition is slated to be the Zips' final tune-up before the MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 7-8, in Oxford, Ohio.
