With reflection and time spent with your family back home, have you been able to wrap your head around what has occurred?
Â
The first couple days when they started to cancel everything felt so surreal. If you would have asked me in March that our lives would be flipped in 180 degrees, I would have laughed. With everything going on now and presently not being able to leave home, I think I've been able to wrap my mind around this pandemic. It is so scary how fast it has taken over the world and affecting tons of people.
Â
However, I think that for a lot of people in the world that this happening allowed us to realize what we have. A lot people miss going to work, school, socializing etc. Today many are so on the go and forget about the importance of family and everything around them. Not being able to leave home, has helped me to reflect and grow myself of appreciation for my loved ones and our world.
Â
Discuss your feelings as the events were occurring that ultimately led to the cancellation of spring sports and you returning home?
Â
Obviously, I was initially upset that I had to put my life aside due to all the cancellations and return home. I'm super grateful that I'm local so it's not too far of a travel for me! Canceling classes and sports was super difficult for me to hear. It's hard to hold yourself accountable for your schoolwork and athletics when you don't have anyone to do it with. You don't realize how important something is until it's taken away from you. But it's out of our control and I'm at peace with that. It's important that we fix our world and stay safe. I'm excited to get back on campus in the fall to continue my classes and see my team!
Â
Discuss your communication with your teammates around the world and back here in Ohio during this time?
Â
Being a part of such a large team, having both men's and women's we are a big family. It really is unfortunate that a lot of us didn't get the closure we wanted for our season and with each other, especially our seniors. We had been having a great season and were super excited for outdoor, so it's hard to just throw all that training away. Though, there is a bigger issue going on that none of us can control and we all understand that. It makes us all the more appreciative of the experiences we have had together! We will continue communicate with each other throughout this, getting through this together and growing stronger every day.
Â
Can you describe what it has means to be a Zip, especially during this time?Â
Â
I am extremely blessed to be a Zip. Being an Akron native before college, many people think of it as just the closet college to attend. However, this school and sport has given me much more than a great education. I have had so many opportunities on the Akron track and field program and built so many life friendships along the way. Without these amazing experiences, I wouldn't be who I am today!
