AUSTIN, Texas – University of Akron senior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) capped his stellar Zips' career with an eighth-place performance in the men's long jump to garner first-team All-America accolades for the third time and headline Akron's efforts on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday, June 5.
By virtue of Latimer's eighth-place performance, Akron extended its streak of having scored every year in the men's competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2013. The Akron women's squad seeks to also extend its streak to seven consecutive years beginning on Thursday, June 6.
Latimer made his third outdoor and sixth overall NCAA Championship appearance in the men's long jump after earning first-team All-America accolades a year ago en route to a second-place performance with a career-best mark of 26-3.75 (8.02m).
Latimer opened the competition with what proved to be his best mark of the day soaring 25-8.25 (7.83m) on his first attempt. He followed with marks of 25-7.50 (7.81m) and 25-6.75 (7.79m) to earn the right to advance to the championship round with the eighth-best mark after the opening three rounds of jumps.
After fouling on the fourth attempt, Latimer posted marks 24-9.25 (7.55m) and 25-2.75 (7.69m) to finish eighth overall and garner first-team All-America honors for the third time as part of six overall All-America citations during his Akron career.
Making his fourth consecutive outdoor and seventh overall NCAA Championship appearance in the men's pole vault, senior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) capped a brilliant Akron career earning second-team All-America honors on the strength of a 13th-place performance.
A five-time first-team All-America recipient, Ludwig finished his Akron career as a seven-time All-American and as the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Champion.
Persevering through three meets over the past month while battling an injury he suffered on his final jump at the Campbell/Wright Invitational on May 4, Ludwig cleared the opening bar of the competition at 17-0.75 (5.20m) on his second attempt after pulling up shy on his initial run at the height.
He followed eclipsing 17-6.50 (5.35m) on his first attempt at the clearance. Ludwig again stopped short on his opening attempt at 18-0.50 (5.50m), before unsuccessfully navigating his second try at the height. Needing a third-attempt clearance to remain in the competition, Ludwig appeared like he had bettered the mark only to see the bar fall from the standards on his follow-through to draw his collegiate career to a close.
Junior Matt Keim (Bolivar, Ohio) made his NCAA Championship debut in the men's pole vault. Unfortunately, he was unable to clear the opening bar (17-0.75/5.20m) at what two weeks ago before a masterful effort the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 24, represented a career-high mark.
The meet welcomes the top-12 qualifiers (24 in all) from both the NCAA East and West Preliminary Rounds to Mike A. Myers Stadium for the semifinal and championship rounds of competition.
Coverage of the meet will be available on Thursday from 8-9 p.m. ET on ESPNU and 9-10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, 8:30-11 p.m. ET on Friday on ESPN, before ESPN2 will round out coverage from 6:30-9 p.m. ET on Saturday.
In addition, live field event coverage will be provided on ESPN3 each of the four days of competition.
The second day of competition is slated to open with the men's 110-meter hurdles as part of the decathlon at 2 p.m. ET. Field events start with the women's hammer at 5:30 p.m. ET, before running events begin with the semifinal round of the women's 4x100 relay at 8:02 p.m. ET. The semifinals of the women's 4x400 relay closes out the day's action at 11:18 p.m. ET.
The women's pole vault with senior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) will commence competition for Akron on Thursday, June 7, at 8:30 p.m. ET. A three-time, first-team indoor All-America honoree, Bryan will be making her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after recording a qualifying mark of 13-8.25 (4.17m) at NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 23.
Senior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) will make her NCAA debut in the semifinals of the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Thursday at 8:32 p.m. ET. She registered a time of 10:01.73 at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 24. The finals of the steeplechase are slated for 6:54 p.m. ET on Saturday.
