CLEVELAND – For the second consecutive week, University of Akron redshirt senior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) earned Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week honors, the MAC announced on Wednesday.
In the team's only action on the week, Geier went 1-0 at the No. 1 position in singles plays on the road, upsetting No. 86 Claudia Bartolome of Pittsburgh in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
"Sophia played an exceptional match against Pitt and absolutely deserves this honor," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "She continues to impress every time she steps on court!"
Overall, Geier stands 14-3 in singles action and a perfect 6-0 in spring action, all at the No. 1 spot.
Geier and Geier and her sophomore partner Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) are 6-1 in doubles action overall and 3-1 this spring.
This is the fourth MAC honor for Akron this spring. Geier was named Singles Player of the Week on Feb. 6. Junior Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and sophomore Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany) earned Doubles Team of the Week on January 30, while Geier and Uljanov were the Doubles Team on Feb. 6.
The Zips (7-1 overall, 0-0 MAC) travel to Duquesne (4-2 overall, 0-0 A-10) on Friday, Feb. 15, for a 1 p.m. match at Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.
