AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field squad under the leadership of 24th-year head coach Dennis Mitchell, has announced the addition of a pair of newcomers to the Zips' 2019 roster in freshman Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) and redshirt junior Maike Anstett (Karlsruhe, Germany).
A native of Doha, Qatar, Andu will compete for Akron in the men's high jump where he owns a personal-best career mark of 7-2.25 (2.20m) set in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia on Feb. 6, 2018. Andu has gained valuable experience training with 2016 Olympic Silver Medalist and 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar. He will major in exercise science.
A native of Karlsruhe, Germany, Anstett will compete for the Zips in the women's high and triple jumps, where she owns career personal-best marks of 5-11.25 (1.81m) and 41-7.25 (12.68m), respectively. She comes to Akron following her graduation this past December from the University of Stuttgart (Germany) with a degree in sports science. At Akron, she will pursue a master's degree in business administration.
Both Andu and Anstett will train under the guidance of former Akron All-American and school-record holder in the high jump, Tomasz Smialek.
Andu and Anstett are expected to bolster Akron's depth in the field events as the Zips were picked in a preseason coaches' poll to capture both the men's and women's indoor titles at the Mid-American Conference Championships to be hosted in Kent, Ohio, Feb. 22-23.
