Complete 95th WOSGA State Amateur Championship Results
AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron senior women's golfer Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) defeated five opponents in match play during a three-day gauntlet at Moundbuilders Country Club in Newark, Ohio to claim the 2018 Women's Ohio State Amateur Championship on July 24-26.
Nicholson entered the 95th WOSGA State Amateur Championship as the No. 8 ranked player and squared-off against No. 25 Madison Spiess in Tuesday's opening round. Nicholson posted her first match play victory with a 4&2 result at the 6,108-yard par-72 course.
Next, 2016 Mid-American Conference Champion faced the No. 24 ranked Shelby Lewis (Florida Southern). Nicholson claimed a 1up second-round win on Wednesday's morning session.
Later that day, Nicholson defeated the top-ranked Madison Butler (Cleveland State) in dramatic fashion. Staring at a two-hole deficit with two holes remaining against the No. 1 seed, Nicholson won both, the 17th and 18th, holes with birdies to force a playoff. Nicholson triumphed with a 1up victory on the 19th hole to advance to the final day of competition.
Nicholson's fourth-round match was against No. 12 Julia Goodson (Kent State). The three-time all-MAC performer defeated Goodson 5&4, advancing to the 2018 WOSGA Championship match.
In the tournament finale, Nicholson battled No. 11 Maria Connelly (Eastern Michigan) for the title. After 9-holes of the title match, Nicholson held a 2up advantage. She won three of the next five holes to finish the tournament with a 5&4 championship win.
The Akron Zips had two additional women's golfers compete in the WOSGA event as sophomores Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) and Abbie Pearce (Green, Ohio) qualified for the 32-player field championship tournament.
No. 2 ranked Pikunas had a strong showing, battling to the semifinal round before falling to Butler (4&3). Pikunas defeated No. 31 Annie Simmel (Taylor) 1up, No. 18 Emily Hughes (Ohio) 1up in 21 holes, and No. 7 Jenna DiPaolo (Dayton) 4&3.
No. 20 ranked Pearce fell 3&1 to No. 13 Kylie Gruelich (Delaware) in opening round action.
The Zips return five letterwinners and one newcomer for the 2018-19 campaign, led by Nicholson and Pikunas. Senior Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio), junior Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) and Pearce round out the Zips seasoned vets, while freshman Ivana Shah (Mumbai, India) will be making her collegiate debut.
Akron opens the 2018-19 campaign at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill. on Sept. 9-10.
