EUGENE, Ore. – University of Akron junior Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) captured first-team All-America accolades on the strength of a sixth-place finish in the women's pole vault to headline the Zips' efforts on the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday, June 7, at historic Hayward Field.
A two-time, first-team indoor All-America honoree, Bryan made her first-ever appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and eclipsed 14-1.25 (4.30m) to place sixth and become a three-time first-team All-American.
"It was a battle in the pole vault," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "A great competition. The winds kept changing back and forth and we tried the best we could to manage it. Lucy (Bryan) was tough and I am very proud of her being able to come out of the event earning some team points."
By virtue of Bryan earning points for the Zips in the women's pole vault, Akron extended its streak as one of only 10 programs nationally to have scored in both the men's and women's team competitions at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships every year since 2014. The Zips are the lone non-Power-5 Conference institution included on that list.
Entering competition this week, Akron was joined by Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana State and Texas A&M from the Southeastern Conference, Oregon and Southern California from the Pac-12 Conference and Texas from the Big 12 Conference. Not represented on the list are schools from the Atlantic Coast and Big Ten Conferences.
Bryan opened her afternoon bettering the first two bars of the competition at 13-1.50 (4.00m) and 13-7.25 (4.15m) on her initials attempts at the marks.
She was unable to clear the bar on her first run at 14-1.25 (4.30m) before eclipsing the mark on her second attempt.
Seeking to establish a new career-high mark of 14-5.25 (4.40m), Bryan came up short on each of her three opportunities to surpass the bar and concluded a successful outdoor campaign with another podium finish.
Junior Dara Perry (Akron, Ohio) made her NCAA debut in the semifinals of the women's 100-meter hurdles and crossed the line in a time of 13.34. Her effort was good for a 20th-place performance and earned Perry honorable mention All-America honors for the first time.
"What a great season for Dara (Perry) getting to the national championship and smashing the school record this year," said Mitchell.
The third day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, June 8, will be highlighted by the opening day of the women's heptathlon featuring seniors Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) and Patricia Ortega (Logrono, Spain). The Zips' duo is seeded ninth and 13th among the 24 participants and owns career- and season-best seven-event cumulative scores of 5,872 and 5,782, respectively.
This year marks Siefring's third appearance in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after placing fifth and 12th in 2017 and 2016, respectively, while Ortega will be making her championship debut in the heptathlon.
The seven-event competition will kick off on Friday with the 100-meter hurdles at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be followed by the high jump (4:30 p.m. ET), shot put (6:30 p.m. ET) and the 200 meters (10:13 p.m. ET).
The heptathlon will be rounded out on Saturday, June 9, with the long jump at 2:30 p.m. ET and will be followed by the javelin and 800 meters at 3:45 and 8:13 p.m. ET, respectively.
Coverage of the meet will be available on ESPN on Friday from 8:30-11 p.m. ET. In addition, live field event coverage will be provided on ESPN3 (1:30-11:30 p.m. ET).
