Murphy Captures National Title in Men’s 800 Meters at USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – In what was billed as a race of redemption, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist and former University of Akron two-time national champion and four-time first-team All-America honoree Clayton Murphy captured the national outdoor title in the men's 800 meters crossing the line in 1:46.50 on the final day of the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium on Sunday, June 24.
Murphy's effort was more than a half second better than the runner-up performance of Isaiah Harris, who crossed the line in 1:47.11, ahead of third-place Eric Sowinski (1:47.76).
Additionally, former Zips' All-American Phil Jagers placed seventh in the men's discus registering a mark of 202-4 (61.68m). He opened his competition posting a mark of 195-5 (59.57m) before recording what proved to be his best throw of the day at 202-4. Jagers followed with a mark of 186-5 (56.83m) on his third and final throw of the preliminaries. After suffering fouls on his initial two throws in the finals, Jagers closed out his day with a mark of 186-8 (56.91m) on his sixth and final throw.
