CLEVELAND – The University of Akron's No. 1 doubles duo of sophomore Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) and freshman Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany) has been named the Mid-American Conference Doubles Team of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday.
Last week. Pedroso and Uljanov helped the Zips to two home wins, winning both doubles matches and helping the team to the doubles point twice.
Against Oakland, the duo beat out Dasha Artamonova and Allison Motea, 6-1. In the win over Butler, Pedroso and Uljanov took care of Rachel Sutton and Jordan Minnick, 6-2.
This spring Pedroso and Uljanov are 4-1 at the No. 1 doubles position for the Zips.
"I'm very happy for Anna and Rita," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett. "I felt like they truly deserved to win this honor after our trip to Kansas State and UMKC. Rita is really leading this doubles pairing, and Anna is embracing the advice and guidance that Rita is giving her, which, along with all of our doubles oriented practice plans, has led to where they currently are as a team. Their ceiling as a doubles pairing is high, and they aren't close to reaching it at this point, which is extremely exciting."
This is the third MAC honor for Akron this spring and first for a doubles team. Senior captain Carli Knezevich (Jan. 24) and true freshman Miruna Vasilescu (Jan. 31) earned MAC Singles Player of the Week honors.
Additionally, Vasilescu was named the Zips' Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week.
Akron (10-6 overall) hosts Youngstown State and LaSalle on Thursday, March 15, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
