AKRON, Ohio – Sophomore Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) highlighted an impressive weekend for the University of Akron track and field squads as her school-record jump in the women's pole vault directed the Zips' performances on the final day of the 14th Annual Akron Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
Akron concluded the weekend establishing a pair of school-record marks courtesy of Bryan and senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio), while earning 11 victories and 42 top-five finishes.
Bryan broke the school record in the women's pole vault surpassing 14-8 (4.47m). The effort stands as the third-highest mark in the NCAA this season and betters the previous standard of 14-7.25 set by 2014 NCAA outdoor pole vault champion Annika Roloff on March 14, 2014.
Turning in the second-longest jump in indoor program history in the men's long jump was redshirt junior Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio), who soared 25-7.50 (7.81m) in his first competition of the season to place second. The mark stands as the eighth-best effort in the NCAA in 2018. Placing fourth with a jump of 23-4.75 (7.13m) was senior Jamir Coleman (Lima, Ohio).
Winning the women's 800 meters with a career-best time of 2:08.34 was redshirt junior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia). Her performance stands as the fourth-fastest time in Akron indoor program history. Sophomore Victoria Stachowski (Waterford, Mich.) also turned in a career-best time of 2:16.87 to place fifth.
Junior Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) won the men's high jump equaling a career-high mark surpassing 7-1 (2.16m), a height which equals the third-best jump in indoor program history. Junior Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) placed third with a clearance of 6-9 (2.06m).
Senior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) registered a career-best mark of 64-8 (19.71m) to claim victory in the men's weight throw. His effort stands as the fourth-longest throw in indoor program history.
For the second week in a row, junior Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) established a career-best mark in the women's shot put to win the event with a throw of 50-7.50 (15.43m). Her performance stands as the fourth-longest throw in indoor program history. Placing fifth with a mark of 46-0.75 (14.04m) was junior Olivia Snyder (Navarre, Ohio).
Remaining unbeaten on the campaign in the men's pole vault was junior Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio), who won the competition eclipsing 18-4.50 (5.60m).
Redshirt sophomore Preston Fillman (Hanoverton, Ohio) was the Zips' top finisher in the men's heptathlon registering a career-best seven-event cumulative score of 4,960. Placing seventh, seventh, ninth, and 12th, respectively, in the final standings with scoring efforts of 4,943, 4,943, 4,905 and 4,187 was redshirt sophomore Malik Hudson (Cleveland, Ohio), sophomore Dylan Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.), junior Kamar Majid (Akron, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Brandon Hochbein (Sarver, Pa.).
Fillman won the 60-meter hurdles to open day two of the heptathlon with a career-best time of 8.21. Dylan Hochbein was Akron's top finisher in the pole vault eclipsing 13-7.25 (4.15m) before pacing the Zips in the 1,000 meters crossing the line in a personal-best time of 2:49.99.
Senior Taron Slone (Columbus, Ohio) posted career-best times of 21.44 and 6.85 to place second and fifth, respectively, in the men's 200 and 60 meters.
Senior Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) finished second in the mile recording a time of 4:08.85.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, redshirt freshman Patrick Kimball (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore Elijah Johnson (Fremont, Ohio) garnered career-best times of 8.14 and 8.20, respectively, to earn second- and fourth-place showings.
Redshirt junior Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio) registered a mark of 52-8.75 (16.07m) to finish third in the men's shot put.
Finishing fourth in the men's triple jump was sophomore Marcques Gibbs (Darby, Pa.) with a mark of 46-11.50 (14.31m), while senior Ariadna Ramos Gandia (Barcelona, Spain) placed second in the women's triple jump soaring 41-1.50 (12.53m).
The Zips capped their weekend efforts turning a pair of second-place finishes in the men's and women's 4x400 relays on the strength of season-best times.
The men's squad of redshirt junior Milton Greer (Copley, Ohio), Slone, redshirt freshman Matt Blamble (Wadsworth, Ohio) and freshman Myron Jones (Streetsboro, Ohio) crossed the line in 3:18.00.
The women's quartet of sophomore Bailey Lack (Brunswick, Ohio), Siefring, Andrews and junior Sydney Stokes (Gahanna, Ohio) posted a time of 3:49.93.
The Zips posted 20 personal-best marks in morning competition in the Blue Division en route to five top-five performances.
Akron returns to action next weekend as the Zips are scheduled to compete at the Spire Invitational (Geneva, Ohio), Kent State Qualifier and the Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas.
