USTFCCCA MEN'S AND WOMEN'S PRESEASON COMPUTER RANKINGS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts in 2017 as the Zips were ranked 35th and 37th, respectively, in the 2018 preseason United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Indoor Track and Field National Team Computer Rankings released on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
The Zips' men's squad is the highest-rated team in the Mid-American Conference.
"The season has just started and we still have a lot to accomplish," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "We are not as concerned about where we are ranked now, but what we can do to be ranked when it counts. If we do a good job coaching, we should have some special performances this year. I already know that we have some extraordinary athletes, who work very hard."
Akron currently has eight student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including sophomore Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England), who owns the No. 2 mark nationally in the women's pole vault (13-11.75/4.26m).
Also rated among the top-25 is Matt Ludwig (third in the men's pole vault – 17-6.50 (5.35m), senior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) (sixth in the women's long jump – 20-0.25/6.10m), redshirt freshman Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) (sixth in the women's pole vault – 13-7.25/4.15m), freshman Jenna Frantz (Versailles, Ohio) (11th in the women's pole vault – 13-1.50/4.00m), senior Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) (12th in the mile – 4:10.07), freshman Noah Williams (Hilton, N.Y.) (13th in the 400 meters – 48.30), senior Taron Slone (Columbus, Ohio) (23rd on the 200 meters – 21.68).
The Zips continue their campaign this weekend traveling to Lexington, Ky., where Akron will compete at the Kentucky Invitational.
