USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC INDIVIDUALS MEN'S RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS, La. - University of Akron sophomore men's track and field team All-American pole vaulter Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio) was recognized for his efforts in the classroom and on the track by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday, July 28, as he was tabbed as the D1 Scholar Athlete of the Year for field events for the 2017 outdoor campaign.
Ludwig, who boasts a 3.856 GPA in biomedical engineering-biomechanics, was one of 516 D1 men's student-athletes nationally to garner USTFCCCA All-Academic accolades.
"What a great year and a great honor for Matt," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "He definitely deserves all these accolades. He is very dedicated and is the ideal student-athlete performing at the highest level both in the classroom and on the field."
Ludwig captured his first-ever NCAA Outdoor title on June 7, at the NCAA Track and Field Championship in Eugene, Ore., surpassing 18-4.50 (5.60m) to win the ninth national championship in program history, including the fifth for an Akron pole vaulter.
Scholar Athletes of the Year were selected as the highest-finishing performers at the NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships who achieved All-Academic status. Those who won individual championship titles ranked higher in the tie-breaking process and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final advantage.
