2017 USTFCCCA NCAA DI OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD REGIONAL AWARDS RELEASE
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Akron men's track and field team continued to reap the rewards for its 2017 campaign as head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell was recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the recipient of the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year accolades.
"I have a great staff and this award is a recognition of all their efforts," Mitchell commented. "Many of them have been with me for several years and they deserve the accolades as well. We have some outstanding athletes and it is great to be a Zip."
In his 22nd campaign leading the Akron track and field program, Mitchell led Zips' men's and women's programs to team titles at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships. It marked the first time in program history in which Akron swept the men's and women's indoor and outdoor team titles in the same season.
The men's program captured its second consecutive and seventh overall MAC outdoor championship with seven league champions this past May.
Four Zips in senior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio), sophomore Matt Ludwig (Chardon, Ohio), junior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) and sophomore Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) have advanced to NCAA Track and Field Championships beginning on Wednesday, June 7, in Eugene, Ore.
Akron is ranked No. 2, 3, 5, 11 and 15 in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA event squad rankings in the long jump, high jump, pole vault, triple jump and discus. Individually, the Zips own four top-25 and 10 top-50 marks in country in 2017, including Ludwig being ranked No. 2 nationally in the pole vault.
The Zips' men's team set two school records and eight top-five marks in program history this spring, while Ludwig owns eighth-best outdoor jump in world in 2017 in the pole vault. Additionally, Akron was the only program in the East region to qualify three to regional in the long jump.
The Zips achieved season-best rankings of No. 26 nationally and No. 1 in the Great Lake Region this spring.
