Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's basketball program added Torrey Patton (Trotwood, Ohio) to the 2017-18 class, head coach John Groce announced on Thursday.
"We are excited about adding Torrey to the 2017-18 class," Groce said. "Torrey adds size and length to our backcourt. He plays with great pace and handles the ball well, which allows him to impact the game in multiple ways. He has a tremendous upside to his game with the determination to continuously improve every year."
The 6-4 guard from Trotwood-Madison High School earned All-Ohio Division II co-Player of the Year honors after leading the Rams to a 26-3 overall record and an appearance in the Ohio State Division II semifinal game. Patton led the squad with 34 points and 11 rebounds in the season finale before falling to the eventual Division II State Champions, St. Vincent-St. Mary, 62-60.
"Aside from being a very skilled guard with the ability to make an immediate impact, Torrey plays his best in big games," Groce said. "He scored a game-high 36 points against Prolific Prep, a game-high 20 points against St. VM (in their first meeting), and a game-high 34 points in the state semifinal. He is highly competitive with great character."
As a senior in high school, Patton led the Rams' scoring efforts with 20.7 points per game. He was also the squad's top rebounder, grabbing 9.1 boards a game while averaging team-highs in assists (5.8) and steals (4.0) per game. In 2017, Patton earned first-team all state for a second consecutive season. As a three year starter he earned all-league accolades each season, while surpassing the 1,000 career points plateau.
