LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2017 indoor campaign registering four victories and 19 top-five performances at the Kentucky Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Capturing the men's long jump with the third-best indoor jump (25-2.50/7.68m) in program history was junior Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio).
In her first competition as a collegian, freshman Lucy Bryan (Backwell, England) took top honors in the women's pole vault eclipsing 13-5.25 (4.10m).
Senior Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio) won the men's triple with a mark of 49-11 (15.21m) before running the third leg of the winning 4x400 relay. Joining him on the winning relay squad with a time of 3:13.20 was redshirt junior Taron Slone (Columbus, Ohio) and seniors Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Alante Oliver (Dayton, Ohio).
"Today was a good start to the season," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "There was some great competition there to challenge us and we were always in the mix. It was good to try a different venue. Kentucky will be hosting the first round outdoors this spring so it helped us prepare for logistics for that trip. We are excited to host our rival next week. It should be a great meet."
Redshirt sophomore Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) and senior Daniella Johnson (Gahanna, Ohio) finished second in the 3,000 meters (9:56.19) and long jump (19-11.50/6.08m), respectively.
Placing third in the pole vault (12-5.50/3.80m) was senior Becky Szabo (North Olmsted, Ohio), while the 4x400 relay squad of freshman Bailey Lack (Brunswick, Ohio), redshirt junior Kiara Chatman (Reynoldsburg, Ohio), senior Daziah Green (Canton, Ohio) and junior Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) crossed the line third in 3:47.24.
