AKRON, Ohio – Zips Athletics has announced the appointment of Matt Newhouse as the associate athletics director for marketing and promotions, Director of Athletics Larry Williams announced on Thursday.
An Akron alum, Newhouse will oversee all Zips' athletics marketing and promotions with a focus on driving ticket sales, increasing attendance and creating a memorable game-day experience. He will coordinate strategic marketing plans, promotions schedules, and community outreach for all of the Zips'18 sports. Newhouse begins his duties at Akron on August 29.
"We are so pleased to bring back a proud Zip who has demonstrated an impressive track record of success in building community through sport," Williams said. "Matt is a talented and seasoned professional who, like so many UA grads, has a fantastic work ethic and mission-centric orientation. He fills a very valuable role on our team."
Newhouse joins the Zips after a year at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. He orchestrated season-long marketing campaigns that saw large attendance increases, including men's soccer, women's soccer, and wrestling.
"My family and I could not possibly more excited about this opportunity," Newhouse said. "This is where we are from, where most of our family lives, and where we want to be. This position allows my career to come full circle to the place where I got started in this business. I cannot wait to get reacquainted with the Akron and surrounding community. We will do great things here for years to come."
Prior to Grand Canyon, Newhouse spent three years at Georgia State as the assistant athletics director for marketing. He helped Division I GSU during its transition from Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) realignment.
Newhouse joined the GSU staff from GamePlan Financial Marketing, LLC, in Atlanta, where he served as director of field marketing since 2010. He previously spent four years (2006-10) with the Florida State athletics program as associate director of marketing and promotions.
While at Florida State, Newhouse coordinated all marketing efforts for the Seminoles' nationally ranked men's basketball and baseball programs, as well as several Olympic sports, and also managed relationships with key corporate partners. Under his leadership, the school set attendance records in men's basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball.
Newhouse also directed FSU's game experience for football, basketball and baseball, including music, video and promotions.
Newhouse earned his bachelor's degree in marketing management in 2005 and his master's in sports science in 2006, both from Akron, where he served as a graduate and intern in athletics marketing.
He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA). In 2014, he was named to the NACMA strategic communications committee.
Natives of Canton, Newhouse and his wife Meredith have four children– sons Hudson (7) and Colton (4), and daughters Cameryn (2) and Lauryn (infant).
