NEW ORLEANS, La. – Fresh off an impressive showing at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in which eight men's student-athletes earned berths into the NCAA Track and Field Championships, the University of Akron men's track and field squad checked in at No. 19 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released on Tuesday, May 31.
"We had a great meet last week, the guys came through," Akron head coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "Hopefully we can make this year's nationals our best ever."
The Zips' men's squad held firm on a grasp of the No. 2 spot in the most-current Great Lakes Regional ratings.
The Zips are the top-rated Mid-American Conference teams ranked in both the men's and women's national polls, with the women's squad rated 44th nationally.
Akron will send 11 student-athletes to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, which will be contested June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
The Zips' contingent will include junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) (1,500 meters-June 8/7:46 p.m. ET), freshmen Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) (men's high jump-June 10/8 p.m. ET) and Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio) (men's high jump-June 10/8 p.m. ET), senior Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) (women's pole vault-June 9/8 p.m. ET), senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain) (women's high jump-June 11/6 p.m. ET), junior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) (men's discus-June 10/8:05 p.m. ET), senior Joe Oduho (Erie, Pa.) (men's long jump-June 8/9 p.m. ET), sophomore Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) (men's long jump-June 8/9 p.m. ET), junior Matt Rowland (men's pole vault-June 8/8 p.m. ET), senior Alex McCune (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (decathlon-June 8/3:30 p.m.) and sophomore Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) (heptathlon-June 10/3:30 p.m. ET).
