MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – After two delays caused by whiteout conditions, Akron and Central Michigan ended in a 4-4 tie after the umpires called the game in the fifth inning on Saturday afternoon in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
"Wish we could have held them to win in the fifth inning but the conditions were very tough," said head coach Julie Jones.
In the programs 40 years of existence, this is the 10th time that a game has ended in a draw and second since coach Jones has been at the helm of the Zips.
Akron is now 18-16-1 (2-3-1 MAC) after the tie and Central Michigan sits at 14-17-1 (1-4-1 MAC).
Going into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Zips were ahead 4-0. In the second inning, Akron took an early 1-0 advantage off an RBI double by sophomore Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) scoring freshman Gabrielle Fredericks (New Philadelphia, Ohio).
After being set down in order for the next two innings, the Zips pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Gambone tripled into the gap in right center field to lead off the inning. Back-to-back doubles by junior Anna Tarpley (Jacksonville, Ohio) and junior Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.) scored two runs for Akron. During the ensuing at-bat, Fruin moved to third and scored on two wild pitches.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Chippewas countered the Zips and knotted up the game at four courtesy of five hits.
Senior Erin Seiler (Bowling Green, Ohio) made the start in the circle for Akron. She pitched five innings, surrendered four runs on 10 hits, and struck out four.
Akron closes out its seven game road trip on Tuesday, April 5, when the Zips travel to Buffalo, N.Y., to take on the Bulls in double-header action. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
