AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron track and field team returns to competition this weekend hosting the first of two home meets this season as the Zips welcome Ashland, Kent State and Youngstown State to the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex for the Northeast Ohio Quad this Friday and Saturday, April 15-16.
Competition gets underway on Friday with the women's and men's hammer being contested starting at 3:30 p.m. Day two of the Northeast Ohio Quad commences with the women's javelin at 11 a.m. Running events kick off with the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 2 p.m. and are scheduled to conclude with the men's and women's 4x400 relays at 5:20 p.m.
The meet will be scored in a triple-dual format with scoring for events going 5-3-2-1 for individual events and 5-3 for relays.
Akron currently has nine student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain), who owns the No. 3 mark nationally in the women's high jump (6-1.25).
Also rated among the top-25 is junior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) (fourth in discus/201-2), junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) (ninth in the 800 meters/1:47.38), sophomore Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) (11th in heptathlon/5,627), redshirt senior Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) (12th in pole vault/13-11.75), sophomore Terrell McClain (12th in long jump/25-6.25), junior Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio) (15th in pole vault/17-4.50), redshirt junior Quentin Cieslinski (Madison, Ohio) (19th in decathlon/7,109) and redshirt junior Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio) (19th in triple jump/51-4.25).
Additionally, the men's 4x400 relay quartet of junior Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio), redshirt seniors Sean Weems (Maple Heights, Ohio) and Brent Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Murphy own the 20th-best time (3:07.36) in the nation.
