AKRON, Ohio - The Akron track and field program continued to receive national recognition for the Zips' efforts this season with a pair of top-20 rankings in the third weekly men's and women's collegiate dual meet rankings of 2016, as compiled by Jesse Squire for Track and Field News.
After Akron garnered six first-place performances at the Penn State National this past Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30, the Zips' men's team held steady at No. 5 nationally, while the women's squad moved up two spots to No. 16 in the country.
Earning top honors in the men's high jump with the third-best jump (7-0.50) in program history was freshman Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio). Equaling his performance, but finishing second based on number of jumps was freshman Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio). Richardson and Stine tied Martel Durant (Feb. 23, 2013) for the third-best jump in program history.
Turning in a first-place effort in the 200 meters with a time of 21.73 was redshirt sophomore Taron Slone (Columbus, Ohio).
Freshman Rebecca Pietsch (Dusseldorf, Germany) took home top honors in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-7.50 (3.85m).
Akron's men's distance medley relay team's school-record setting performance highlighted the Zips' efforts on the opening day of the Penn State National on Friday, Jan. 29.
The quartet of juniors Dan Zupan (Berea, Ohio) and Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio) and junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) ran a school-record time of 9:42.42 to place fifth in the distance medley relay invitational.
Sophomore Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio) registered the fourth-best mark in program history winning the long jump with a leap of 24-11 (7.59m).
Senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the weight throw with a mark of 66-10 (20.37m).
The Zips return to action hosting the 12th annual Akron Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6, at the Stile Athletics Field House.
