Zips garner USTFCCCA team and individual academic recognition for 2015 campaign

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Akron track and field team was rewarded for its efforts in the classroom as the Zips' men's and women's squad were tabbed by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as 2015 All-Academic Team recipients, the USTFCCCA unveiled on Friday, July 17.
A total of 224 women's and 123 men's teams earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher. The Akron women's squad recorded a 3.29 cumulative GPA, while the men posted a 3.02 GPA.
Individually, Akron garnered 12 selections to the 2015 All-Academic Individual List, including the Zips' women's squad, with eight honorees, a mark that led the Mid-American Conference (men and women).
"We are very proud of these academic accomplishments," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "It is a "big deal" for our program as we teach here that you can be the greatest athlete and student you want to be at the same time. Our team and these individual athletes in the program demonstrated this view."
Earning All-Academic honors for the 2015 campaign from Akron were Quentin Cieslinski (3.411, chemical engineering), Kyle Cochrun (3.864, English), Jess Delic (3.687, nursing), Claudia Garcia Jou (4.0, exercise science), Weronika Gaudyn (3.409, fashion merchandising), Caroline Hasse (3.976, psychology), Bryce Lemon (3.393, civil engineering), Claire Lucas (4.0, entrepreneurship/finance), Ana Martin-Sacristan (3.281, organizational supervision), Jackie Siefring (3.813, biology), Becky Szabo (3.405, biomedical engineering) and Dan Zupan (3.282, social studies).
In all, a total of 838 women from 237 institutions and 529 men from 165 schools earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2015 campaign.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
• For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
• For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
