AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron track and field team returns to the track this weekend participating at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, and at the Jesse Owens Track and Field Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
The majority of the squad will make their second visit to the University of Texas this season to compete in the Longhorn Invitational this Saturday, May 2.
The Zips will be part of 17-team field at the Longhorn Invitational which includes student-athletes from Baylor, Florida State, Houston, Incarnate Word, Loyola (New Orleans), North Texas, Oklahoma, San Jose State, SMU, Stanford, Stephen F. Austin, UT-San Antonio, Texas, Texas State, Tulane and Tulsa.
The trio of senior Claire Lucas (Sagamore Hills, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) and sophomore Becky Szabo (North Olmsted, Ohio) will go up against the women's collegiate record holder in the pole vault in Stephen F. Austin's Demi Payne at 1:30 p.m. CT.
Fresh off his victory at the Drake Relays, junior Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) is set to be among a talented field of pole vaulters that includes American record holder Brad Walker in the men's pole vault at 5 p.m. CT.
Competing at the Jesse Owens Track and Field Classic on Friday, May 1, will be freshman Rachel Audet (Sylvania, Ohio), freshman Garrett Crichlow (Twinsburg, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Trevor Norris (Avon Lake, Ohio), senior Jillian Roth (North Canton, Ohio) and redshirt junior Casey Slane (Marion, Ohio).
Hitting the track at Ohio State on Saturday, May 2, will be sophomore Kasey Beard (Mogadore, Ohio), freshman Adam Downing (Sylvania, Ohio), freshman John Harris (Pickerington, Ohio), redshirt junior Bobby Mitman (Mansfield, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Sean Poholski (Barberton, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Taron Slone (Columbus, Ohio).
The Akron men's squad jumped into the top 25 in latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings released on Monday, April 27 for the first time during the outdoor campaign checking in at No. 25. The Zips' women's team is ranked 44th. The squads are also rated third and sixth, respectively, in the most recent Great Lakes Regional rankings.
The Zips have six student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including Barber, who owns the top mark nationally in the men's pole vault (19-4.25).
Also rated among the top-25 is senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain) (third in high jump/6-1.50), senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) (10th in hammer/209-9), freshman Jordan Latimer (Huber Heights, Ohio) (14th in long jump/25-2), sophomore Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) (17th in 800 meters/1:47.98) and Hasse (19th in pole vault/13-9.25).
