Swimming and Diving Finalizes Competition at LESI Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team claimed first place in the Lake Erie Swimming Senior Championship meet at Ocasek Natatorium over the weekend with a total of 868 points.
Twenty women's teams were represented at the USA Swimming event. Akron recorded seven first-place finishes throughout the weekend.
The Zips dominated the relays, taking first in the 400-yard medley relay (3:50.19) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.77). Akron also claimed first and second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a top time of 3:27.62.
Freshman Paloma Marerro Munoz was a part of each first-place relay team as she also took first in the 100-yard butterfly at 56.27, for the fourth-best time in program history. Marrero Munoz then touched second in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:52.98.
Also a part of all three first-place relays was junior Hannah Raspopovich, who raked in a 50-yard freestyle victory with a time of 23.33 and took second in the 100-yard fly with a time of 57.36.
Sophomore Kara Kaulius placed in the top three in three of her four events while junior Ashley Niznik also notched three top-three times, including a first-place time of 2:05.31 in the 200-yard IM.
Freshman Natalie O'Brien also picked up an individual victory, coming in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.48 to go with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
Overall, the Zips recorded twenty finishes landing in the top three, highlighted by a one-two-three sweep in the 50-yard freestyle, led by Raspopovich. Niznik and freshman Susan Franz followed for second and third, respectively. Akron also took fifth, sixth and seventh in the event.
The Zips will next compete when they send sophomore Rachel Aepelbacher, junior Alice Hottensmith and sophomore Paige Kelkenberg to the NCAA Diving Zones on March 12-14 at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
