AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Akron softball team closed out its season Thursday night with a 6-1 loss to Northern Illinois in the second round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Firestone Stadium.
Freshman Savannah Fruin delivered an RBI double to left center field in the top of the seventh inning to put the Zips on the board but the two-out rally would be short lived.
UA finishes its campaign with a 27-16 overall record, while NIU moved to 24-30 with the result. Erin Seiler threw all six innings in the circle and struck out seven, putting a cap on her impressive sophomore season with a 20-9 mark.
Six different Zips recorded a hit on the night, but it was not enough to neutralize Northern's 10 hits.
The Huskies scored early with three quick runs in the bottom of the first inning, stringing together four singles to help their offensive attack.
Akron struggled to put together hits against NIU starter Jessica Sturm (15-17) who earned the complete game for the Huskies. The Zips put a pair of runners on base in the second and the fourth inning, courtesy of leadoff singles from Schneider and Roudabush, but were ultimately unable to capitalize with two outs.
NIU tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Zips, down to their final out, had a chance to work some magic in the seventh. Taryn Allmon and McKenzi Rhodes issued back-to-back singles to set the stage for Fruin.
The freshman placed a 2-2 pitch perfectly in the gap in left center field that rolled all the way to the fence to score Allmon and put a pair of runners in scoring position for the top of the order, but Sturm ended the game on a groundout with one last pitch.
