AKRON, Ohio -- Alyssa Nicholas' two-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth inning that rallied The University of Akron softball team to a 5-2 win over Toledo Sunday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field.
With the victory, the Zips completed a two-game sweep of the Rockets and improved to 19-10 overall, including a 5-3 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Nicholas' home run was her third of the season and snapped a 2-all tie.
Akron starting pitcher Erin Seiler went the distance – allowing just five hits – to improve to 12-4 on the year. After allowing a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth, the sophomore retired 10 of the final 11 batters she faced to register her team-leading 14th complete game in 18 starts. Seiler walked two and fanned three.
Toledo starter Emily Anderson (13-15) allowed all five runs over six innings. She walked three and struck out one. With the loss, UT fell to 14-27 overall and 5-7 in the MAC.
Jessica Reiman led off the Zips' fouth with a double to center but was in danger of being stranded after a pair of UA fly outs to left field. Erin Pond kept the inning alive however with a two-bagger of her own that plated Akron's first run of the game. Taryn Allmon followed with a run-scoring single and came around on Nicholas' round-tripper that cleared the fence in left center field.
Akron used small ball to add an insurance run in the fifth inning on just one base hit. Shawna Mailloux led off with a single and took second with her team-high 18th stolen base of the season. She then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Wildey and crossed the plate thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jessica Reiman.
In all, six batters combined on UA's seven hits Sunday, led by Mailloux, who was a perfect 2-for-2.
UA will next jump out of conference for a mid-week doubleheader at Dayton. The Zips and Flyers will play the first of two Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. at UD Softball Stadium.
