ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Akron softball team rode the solid pitching of Erin Seiler for the second-straight day to pick up its fourth consecutive win, 2-1, over Eastern Michigan on Sunday afternoon.
Seiler threw her second complete game in as many days to secure the series victory for UA (15-6, 2-0 MAC). The sophomore improved her record to 9-2 in the circle, striking out eight without a walk.
Eastern (8-21, 0-4 MAC) was led by a 2-for-3 performance from Aoife Duffy, who scored the Eagles' only run of the day. Lindsay Rich (3-10) was tagged with the loss.
The Zips got on the board early with a pair of quick runs in the first two innings and despite leaving 11 runners on base for the game, UA's defense hung on to defeat EMU.
It only took Akron four pitches to plate its first run of the game. Shawna Mailloux took the first pitch of the day for a double to right center field to get the Zips rolling. Erin Pond laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mailloux over to third, and Chelsea Wildey stepped to the plate to deliver an RBI single.
UA took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, loading the bases and taking advantage of an EMU infield error. The Zips were unable to extend their advantage with only one out however, as Rich forced back-to-back outs to limit the threat.
The Eagles picked up their run in the bottom of the third, taking Seiler for a pair of doubles before the sophomore struck out Rich and ended the inning.
Akron had several chances to tack on a few insurance runs but was not able to cash in with runners in scoring position. Seiler allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh but turned around to force a game-ending ground out for the win.
The Zips return to the field on Friday, April 4, when they host Buffalo in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field. League play will continue for UA next Saturday and Sunday with single games against crosstown rival Kent State as part of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge.
