Cieslinski Completes First Day Of Decathlon At USA Junior Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – University of Akron redshirt freshman Quentin Cieslinski finished the first day of the men's decathlon in 15th place out of 23 competitors Wednesday at the USA Junior Championships, hosted by Drake University.
In all, the native of Madison, Ohio, tallied 3,261 points through the first five events, including the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash. Scott Filip, who is competing unattached, is currently leading the pack with 4,064 points.
Cieslinski's best individual finish came in the high jump. With a top clearance of 6-02.75, he tied for ninth place, which was good for 714 points. He also earned 579 points in the shot put with a top throw of 37-10.50.
Cieslinski and the rest of the decathletes will complete the final five events – 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run – starting at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Freshman teammate Trevor Norris, who competed in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, will run the 10K Friday evening, starting at 10 p.m. ET.
Rounding out the week for the Zips, junior Brittany Funk will take part in the senior division of the women's hammer throw Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET.
