AKRON, Ohio – Twenty-one University of Akron track and field athletes were in action Saturday in multiple meets across the country, wrapping up what was another busy week of competition for the Zips.
For the second straight day, Akron throwers were in the spotlight at the Triton Invitational, hosted by the University of California San Diego. Leading the way was Alexis Cooks, who posted a season-high mark in the women's shot put with a top throw of 49-07.00, which was good for eighth place.
On the men's side, Nick Banke participated in three events, placing third and 11th in the open divisions of the shot put (57-00.75) and discus (175-06), respectively, and 12th in the invitational hammer throw with a mark of 181-07.
Jessica Delic also took fourth in the women's javelin (135-01) while Bryce Lemon came in eighth in the men's event with a mark of 198-05.
After establishing a personal record in the 1,500-meters at the Hillsdale College "Gina" Relays Friday night, Kayla Whitlow achieved a career best again in the 800-meters Saturday. In all, the junior finished runner-up in the event, posting a time of 2:10.48.
Headlining the list of Akron athletes competing at the Ashland Alumni Open, Sarah Baker (18:08.26) and Jillian Roth (18:38.14) finished 1-2 in the women's 5,000-meter run and Nate Chronister (23-10.00) and Darien Spann (23-01.25) came in 2-3 in the men's long jump competition. It was a personal record for Baker, who shaved more than 20 seconds off her previous outdoor best. As the top collegiate finisher to former Akron All-American Collister Fahie (24-01.00), Chronister also established a personal record in a runner-up performance.
Another Akron athlete establishing a PR Satuday was Noelle Bradley, who finished runner-up in the women's long jump with a top leap of 18-05.75.
With the outdoor season winding down, the Zips will be home for the following two weekends. UA will first host the annual Campbell/Wright Invitational from May 3-4 at Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex before welcoming the league to campus for the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships from May 9-11.
