FISHERS, Ind. – Scoring conditions were much better on Tuesday as The University of Akron women's golf team saw a 14-shot improvement from Monday to post a top-five finish at the of the 2013 Mid-American Conference Preview on the par-72, 6,127-yard Hawthorns Golf & Country Club.
Monday's conditions were tough as the course was wet from several days of rain in addition to strong winds. The Zips carded a round of 313 (+25) to finish in fifth place with a two-day score of 640 (+64). Toledo posted a seven-shot win in the event (611, +35), which was played on the same course as the 2014 MAC Championship.
Freshman Lina Bengtsson and senior Sara Chaves led the Zips on day two, finishing tied for ninth place with two-round tallies of 155 (+11). Bengtsson posted a round of 76 (+4) while Chaves carded a 75 (+3). For Bengtsson, she has been Akron's top finisher or shared top-performer honors in each of her first three collegiate events.
Junior Laura Murray used a round of 6-over 78 to climb 28 spots into a tie for 38th place (164, +20). Sophomore Frida Fougberg closed out the week in a tie for 47th place (166, +22) after posting a round of 84 (+12).
Sophomore Sierra Everson, playing as an individual, ended play on Tuesday in a tie for 52nd place (167, +23) following a round of 85 (+13).
Freshman Mallory Etcheberry, playing in her first collegiate event, rounded out the scoring five in a tie for 81st place (178, +34). She posted an 87 (+15) during the final round.
The Zips will close the fall slate on October 14 when they travel to Port Clinton, Ohio, for the Rocket Classic.
