Women's Golf Sits in Eighth Place After Day One of Rocket Classic

PORT CLINTON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's golf team closed day one of the Rocket Classic in eighth place on Monday at the par-72, 5,929-yard Catawba Island Club.
The Zips finished the day with a two-round score of 633 (+57) after posting scores of 315 (+27) and 318 (+30). Akron will enter the final round just seven shots outside the top five and 11 strokes out of second place. Tournament-host Toledo holds a 25-shot lead on the field (597, +21).
Lina Bengtsson and Sara Chaves led the way for the Zips on day one, finishing tied for 23rd place with identical 36-hole scores of 157 (+13). Bengtsson carded rounds of 77 (+5) and 80 (+8), while Chaves posted scores of 79 (+7) and 78 (+6).
Frida Fougberg finished one stroke behind teammates Bengtsson and Chaves with a score of 14-over 158 after back-to-back rounds of 7-over 79.
Laura Murray sits in a group at 17-over 161, good for a tie for 36th place. She opened play with an 80 (+8) before closing the day with a round of 81 (+9).
Sierra Everson rounded out the scoring-five in a tie for 73rd place (176, +32).
Mallory Etcheberry and Lesli Stolly ended the day in a tie for 68th (172, +28) and a tie for 71st place (173, +29), respectively. Etcheberry carded rounds of 87 (+15) and 85 (+13), while Stolly, appearing in her first collegiate event, posted an 86 (+14) and an 87 (+15).
The Zips will conclude play on Tuesday, with the final round set for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. ET. Fans can follow the round live via Golfstat Live Scoring.
