NCAA Championships Day Two Halted Due to Inclement Weather
June 09 | Track & Field
DES MOINES, Iowa – Heavy thunderstorms halted Thursday night's competition in the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium. University of Akron male student-athletes Collister Fahie (long jump) and Bjorn Johansson (decathlon) will have to wait until Friday to complete their respective events.
Johansson moved up six places to 16th in day two of the decathlon with 6,181 points through eight events. Participants completed three events today before the inclement weather set it. Johansson clocked in at 15.44 in the 110-meter hurdles, registered a first-place toss of 158-03 in the discus and achieved a height of 16-00.34 in the pole vault, which was seventh best in the 24-person field. Competition in the javelin, which was in progress when the weather delay began, and 1500 meters will be held on Friday.
In the long jump, Fahie sits in 12th place thanks to a leap of 25-07.25 on his third attempt. Competition in that event will resume on Friday as well.
Also on Friday, UA's Katherine Lee will participate in the women's pole vault final at 6:25 p.m. ET and Willie Brown will compete in the final of the men's 800 meters at 8:20 p.m. The 800m race will air live on the CBS College Sports Network.
Brown, the reigning Mid-American Conference champion and school record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor 800m, finished second in Wednesday's semifinal race with a school-record time of 1:45.91. That time automatically qualified him for the Olympic trials as well as the U.S. Championships later this month.
Live results for this week's events will be available at FlashResults.com. A live video stream will also be posted on NCAA.com.
