Track Heads to Lone Star State for Texas Relays

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron track and
field team will have a split squad this week as 19 members will
travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the 84th Clyde Littlefield
Texas Relays starting on Wednesday and continuing through Saturday.
The rest of the Zips will head down to Durham, N.C. for the Duke
Invitational Friday.
Among the UA competitors in action at the Texas Relays this week,
Collister
Fahie (100m, long jump, triple jump) and Nick
Banke (hammer, shot put, discus) will participate in three
events while Brittany
Cheese (heptathlon, 100 hurdles), Felcia Close (heptathlon, 100
hurdles), Valerie
Wert (hammer, discus) and Daryl
Baptiste (100m, long jump) will be competing in two.
Akron will also feature five competitors in the pole vault (Ariane
Beaumont-Courteau and Katherine
Lee on the women's side and Kenny
Owens, Mike
Uhle and Joe
Wesley on the men's), two in the javelin (Nick
Erdesky and Tyler
Sweet) and two more in the decathlon (Bjorn
Johansson and Jamey
Robson). Rounding out the list of UA athletes making the trip
are Eric
Hubbard (hammer), KC
LaCross (400 hurdles), Mike
McCall (high jump) and Tyshaun
Peoples (110 hurdles).
For the Zips, the Texas Relays get underway at 12:30 p.m. (EST)
Wednesday as Cheese and Close begin the first four events (100
hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m) of the heptathlon. Johnansson
and Robson will get started in the decathlon (100, long jump, shot
put, high jump and 400m) a half hour later to wrap up day one.
The final stages of the multi events open the day Thursday with the
hammer - both men's and women's - and men's pole vault to follow.
Owens and Wesley will representing the Zips in the "B" section of
the pole vault before LaCross finishes up day two with the
preliminary round of men's 400 hurdles.
Preliminary heats for the other hurdle events, both the women's 100
and the men's 110, as well as the men's 100m will start Akron's
morning Friday at 10:30 a.m. as Baptiste, Cheese, Close, Fahie and
Peoples attempt to qualify for Saturday's finals. Baptiste and
Fahie will then head over to the long jump pit at 11:00 a.m. while
at the same time Beaumont-Courteau and Banke will compete in the
pole vault and the shot put, respectively. After a break for lunch,
Banke and Wert (Section A) will have their turn in the discus while
Fahie competes in the triple jump.
McCall will start things off for the Zips Saturday at Noon in the
high jump an hour before Lee competes in the pole vault (Section A)
an hour later. The final day of competition concludes in the
afternoon when when Erdesky and Sweet take their turn in the
javelin at 2:30 p.m. and Uhle competes in the pole vault (Section
A) at 4:00 p.m.
