AKRON, Ohio – Demetrius Treadwell scored 15 points to lead five Zips in double-figures as The University of Akron men's basketball team pushed its win streak to three with an 88-62 victory over Youngstown State Monday night at Rhodes Arena.
Treadwell connected on 7-of-11 shots from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds in just 19 minutes for the Zips, who improved to 6-5 on the season. UA has now won six straight games over the Penguins (6-5) overall and 14 in a row in the series at Rhodes Arena.
Joining Treadwell in double figures was Nikola Cvetinovic, who added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Chauncey Gilliam, who scored 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Alex Abreu and Brian Walsh, who also recorded a career-high six rebounds, chipped in with 10 points apiece.
It was the second consecutive game UA had five players reach double digits in scoring after also doing so in a lopsided win over Florida A&M (91-69) last weekend.
Back-to-back three balls from Brett McClanahan sparked a 10-0 Akron run midway through the first half to give the Zips an early 17-12 lead. Youngstown State kept it close momentarily however, thanks to 12 second-chance points off of six offensive rebounds and a trio of three-pointers from DuShawn Brooks, who finished with a game-high 20 points.
But the Zips ripped off another big run – this time a 17-3 surge over 5:35, highlighted by a thunderous breakaway dunk by Gilliam and a successful and-one from Cvetinovic – to pull away before the intermission.
Treadwell keyed the first half for the Zips, who took a 41-30 lead into the break, with nine points on 4-for-6 shooting and four rebounds. Akron scored the first seven points of the second half and cruised the rest of the way, leading by as many as 30 points, 88-58, with 1:31 to play.
Akron, which shot 46.3 percent (31-for-67) from the floor and 39.1 percent (9-for-23) from three-point range, out-rebounded Youngstown State, 47-32. Conversely, UA limited YSU to 40.7 percent (24-for-59) shooting from the floor and forced 21 Penguins' turnovers.
The Zips also attempted 10 more free throws than the Penguins, converting 77.3 percent (17-for-22) from the stripe.
Akron's holiday homestand continues Wednesday night when UA welcomes North Carolina A&T to Rhodes Arena at 7 p.m. ET.
Zips Notebook: Akron has now won its last 13 games overall at Rhodes Arena ... Zeke Marshall, who is ninth on the Mid-American Conference's career blocked shots list, added another rejection Monday to push his total to 181 over two and a half seasons ... UA has won its last three games by an average margin of 23.7 points.
