Men's Basketball Falls 69-66 at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND – Zeke Marshall had a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds as Akron dropped a 69-66 road contest to Cleveland State Saturday at The Wolstein Center.
Marshall finished the game 4-of-8 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Demetrius Treadwell added a career-high 15 points while Quincy Diggs pitched in with 11 points.
For the game, Akron (3-5) shot 42.6 percent from the floor (20-of-47) and 55.6 percent from long range (5-of-9). Cleveland State (10-1) closed the day shooting 45.6 percent from the field (26-of-57) and 42.1 percent from behind the 3-point arc (8-of-19).
Both teams committed 15 turnovers while the Vikings held a 31-28 advantage on the boards.
CSU's Trevon Harmon equaled Marshall's 16 points.
CSU pushed its advantage to 42-33 with 17:10 to go in the game, scoring seven of the half's first 10 points. That lead grew to 50-37 at the 13:22 mark in the second half.
Akron used the next 4:14 to slowing close in on the Vikings, cutting the lead to 54-47 with 9:08 left in the game. The Zips kept the pressure on, chipped away at the charity stripe and took its first lead of the second half (65-64) on a Chauncey Gilliam layup with 3:31 left on the clock.
Cleveland State tied the game at 66-66 with 1:37 left and a Jeremy Montgomery 3-pointer game the Vikings a 69-66 lead with 21.2 on the clock. A Treadwell 3-point attempt from the corner fell short with 1.8 seconds left.
The Zips took control of the game early in the first half thanks to 10 points by Marshall in the contest's first 8:05. The Zips lead would stand a 15-11 with 11:55 to go before halftime.
The Vikings answered with a 14-4 run to open up a 25-19 advantage with 7:04 to go in the opening half. The Zips responded, rattling off nine-straight points to regain the lead (28-25) with 4:13 left before intermission.
CSU closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room. For the half, the Zips shot 45.5 percent from the floor (10-of-22) and 33.3 percent from long distance (1-of-3). The Vikings shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) and 45.5 percent from 3-point range (5-of-11).
Marshall led the Zips with 10 points and three boards while Treadwell had eight points and two boards. Akron held a 14-12 advantage on the boards, but committed nine turnovers in the opening half to five by Cleveland State.
The Zips kept it close in the half by converting 9-of-12 from the charity stripe (75.0 percent) while the Vikings did not have an attempt.
The Zips return home for a five-game home stand on Thursday, Dec. 15, when they play host to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tipoff at Rhodes Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET.
Zips Notebook: Senior guard Brett McClanahan played in his 100th game for the Blue & Gold, joining senior forward Nikola Cvetinovic (115) as the only two players to appear in 100 games on the current roster ... sophomore guard Brian Walsh made his first collegiate start ... Demetrius Treadwell's previous career high of 13 points came against Valparaiso on Nov. 18.
