Tennis Gets By Toledo 5-2, Ties Program's Best Start

AKRON, Ohio - The nationally-ranked University of Akron tennis team posted a 5-2 win over Toledo on Friday in a Mid-American Conference contest outdoors at Springside Racquet and Fitness Club. Listed No. 63 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, the Zips improved to 13-0 (2-0 MAC) and tied the program's best start to a season - matching the 1990-91 squad.
UA again held strong in doubles, winning at all three positions to claim the early point for the 12th-straight time this season. The UA pair of Angelina Jogasuria and Anya Baronayte earned an 8-5 win over Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva at No. 2 to clinch the point, after the Zips' duo of Zara Harutyunyan and Jeremie Benjamin got the best of Silvia Carvajal and Melissa Reynolds 8-2 at No. 3. At No. 1, Angelika Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart won 8-4 over Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis. Baronayte's win at No. 2 gave her the 100th combined victory of her collegiate career.
The Zips moved the match score to 4-0, with victories at the Nos. 5, 1, and 4 flights of singles, respectively. Baronayte quickly disposed of Rahshell Washington at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0. Harutyunyan posted a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 1 over Wodzinski, while Pantusart tallied a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Zoubareva. Harutyunyan, the nation's 81st-ranked singles player, improved to 13-0 in dual-match singles competition this season and has yet to lose a set.
Toledo (8-4, 1-1) earned its points with victories at Nos. 3 and 6 singles. At the third flight, Frey topped Angelika Jogasuria, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5, while Carvajal downed Benjamin 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 at the sixth position. Angelina Jogasuria scored a three-set win at No. 2, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4, over Guirguis.
Akron, which is the only undefeated Division I squad in the nation, posted its first win over Toledo since May 1, 1999 to end a stretch of 13-consecutive victories by the Rockets in the all-time series. Additionally, UA's win ended UT's three-match win streak this year.
The Zips close out a three-game homestand on Saturday, when
league foe Eastern Michigan (6-9, 0-2) visits. First serve is
scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Springside Racquet and Fitness Club in
nearby Fairlawn (driving directions). Fans can also follow the
