Zips Quartet Sets Three Records at LSU Tiger Relays

BATON ROUGE, La. - In the first outdoor track & field meet of the season for The University of Akron, the 4x800 relay team of J'Lani Pryce, Adam Stackpole, Zachary Goulet and Willie Brown set three records in the winning the event at the LSU Tiger Relays.
The Zips' quartet posted a time of 7:36.93, setting an Akron record, an LSU Tigers Relays meet record and a LSU B. Moore Track record. Pryce, Stackpole, Goulet and Brown broke a four-year school record of 7:40.72 and a one-year meet and track record (7:39.19), set by a TCU relay squad last March.
Senior Lauren Whitehill had an impressive performance in her first meet of the season, placing second in the javelin with a throw of 143-3. Katie Nentwick placed fifth with a throw of 120-5.
In the women's hammer, Valerie Wert had a solid outing with a throw of 190-8, which would have easily been an NCAA Regional mark in the old system. She was four in the field, but second among the collegians. Winning the event was former Zip and 2009 NCAA hammer champion Stevi Large with a throw of 213-3. Last March, Large set the meet record with a throw of 214-11.
In the men's hammer, Eric Hubbard placed third with a personal-record effort of 194-3, which also ranks third-best on the UA all-time list. Freshman Nick Banke placed 10th (161-8).
In the high jump, Mike McCall placed fifth (6-6) on the men's side, while, on the women's side, Abigail Kuelling (5-3.75) and Brittany Cheese (5-1.75) placed seventh and 10th, respectively. The Zips added a pair of fourth-place finishes in the women's shot put and women's long jump. Allison Lawyer had a mark of 46-5.50 in the shot, while Lee had a leap of 18-10.75. Felicia Close added a 14th-place finish in the shot with a personal record of 36-7.
Tyshaun Peoples, who passed on his final three attempts, just missed a personal record in the long jump, placing sixth with a distance of 24-2.50. The sophomore also qualified for Saturday's final in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.36, finishing fifth in the preliminary, while Zach Harper (14.93) and Bjorn Johansson (15.45) placed 10th and 17th, respectively.
Fellow sophomore Phil Ferguson, in the 100 meters, also qualified for Saturday's final, placing ninth in the premlin with a time of 10.83.
The LSU Tiger Relays continue Saturday.
