Tennis Downs Xavier 6-1, Improves to 3-0

AKRON, Ohio - Sophomore Zara Harutyunyan's
straight-sets win at No. 1 singles clinched the match point, while
also giving her the 100th combined win of her career as the
University of Akron tennis team got the best of Xavier 6-1 on
Sunday in its home-opener at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
The Zips improved their dual-match record to 3-0 and attained their
first 3-0 start since the 1991-92 season, the program's last year
in the North Star Conference before joining the Mid-American
Conference.
Harutyunyan, who is ranked 75th nationally, topped Katie Pleiman
6-0, 6-4 to give UA a 4-1 advantage in the match and at the same
time became the 14th player in program history to reach the 100-win
plateau.
"It's exciting to see Zara etch her named into the Akron tennis
history book," fourth-year Akron head coach Jeffrey Wyshner said.
"It is a testament to her hard work and dedication. Earning 100
wins in a career is a great accomplishment, so for her to have done
so during her sophomore year is incredible."
Harutyunyan teamed with Angelina Jogasuria at No.
1 doubles to earn an 8-2 win, while the UA duo of Prang
Pantusart and Angelika Jogasuria posted
an 8-2 win at the No. 2 position to earn the doubles point. The
Zips pair of Anya Baronayte and Carolina
Castro Cota notched an 8-5 win at No. 3 to complete the sweep
of the early portion of the competition.
"Today was a good solid team win," Wyshner said. "This was the best
we have played in doubles thus far during the young season."
Along with Harutyunyan's win at No. 1 singles, Akron also received straight-sets wins at No. 2 (Angelina Jogasuria, 6-3, 6-2), No. 3 (Angelika Jogasuria, 6-4, 6-3), No. 4 (Pantusart, 6-0, 6-2) and No. 5 (Baronayte, 6-0, 6-3).
Xavier (0-5) earned its one point at No. 6 singles, where
Christie Pleiman topped UA's Jeremie Benjamin 6-1,
6-1.
Akron's next three contests are on the road, as the team travels to
Eastern Kentucky on Feb. 6, Louisville on Feb. 7 and Cleveland
State on Feb. 20.
