(Noon - Day 1):
University of Akron senior Stevi
Large defended her MAC hammer title and teammate Valerie
Wert, a sophomore, was runner-up for the second straight year.
Large set yet another record as her winning throw of 213-10 (65.19)
bettered her own MAC Championships meet record. (Large threw an
Akron and MAC all-time record 221-1 (67.40) last weekend at UA's
Campbell/Wright Invitational. Wert placed second
with a personal-record throw of 198-2 (60.41), second-best on the
UA all-time performers list. Large is just the fourth women's
student-athlete to compete a career sweep in an event as LaTasha
Jenkins (Ball State) won four 200m titles from 1996-99; Akron's
Beata Rudzinska won four 800m titles from 2003-06 and Laura Murphy
(Bowling Green) won four 1500m titles from 1982-85.
(1:00 pm - Day 1):
Akron's Felicia Close and Katie
Nentwick started the heptathlon strong as each ran a
personal-record times of 15.03 and 15.04, respectively, in the 100m
hurdles. For the men, Weston Lott started the decathlon with a
personal-record time of 11.43
(2:00 pm - Day 1):
Akron wont he second completed event of the day. Following the 1-2
finish in the women's hammer, the Zips went 1-2-4 in the men's
javelin. Sophomore Tyler Sweet defended his title with a throw
of 213-8 (65.14), while classmate Nick
Erdesky placed second with a throw of 210-3 (64.09), bettering
his sixth-place finish from last season. Daniel
Kinsey placed fourth with a throw of 198-9 (60.59) although he
passed on all his attempts in the final as he had just finished the
100m and was competing the long jump of the decathlon.
(4:00 pm - Day 1):
Daniel Kinsey won the decathlon shot put with a
personal-record distance of 50-0.50 (15.25) and out-distanced the
field by 57 points in the event. Through three decathlon events,
Kinsey is second, 137 points behind first, Miami's Kevin Dwyer,
while Weston Lott is sixth. Alina
Bocicor, who has qualified for the high jump in the NCAA
Regional, won the heptathlon high jump with a clearance of 5-8.50
(1.74), just a quarter inch off her personal record.
(5:00 pm - Day 1):
Akron's Carrie Kayes made it a season sweep, winning both
the indoor and outdoor pole vault. The junior cleared 13-1.50
(4.00) with UA freshman Katherine Lee placing third with a vault of
12-7.50 (3.85). The heptathlon finished its first four events of
day 1 with Akron's Katie Nentwick running a personal record in the
200m (26.66). Through four events, UA's Alina
Bocicor is fourth with 2,975 points with KSU's Diana
Dumitrescus 3,387 points. Nentwick stands in eighth (2,802 pts.)
and Felicia Close is ninth (2,624 pts.). For the
third consecutive year, junior Lauren
Whitehill scored in the javelin as she placed third with a
personal record and her first NCAA Regional mark of 143-10 (43.84).
That distance is also third-best on the UA all-time performers
list.
(5:30 pm - Day 1):
Through four events of the decathlon, Akron's Daniel
Kinsey took the overall lead, tying for third in the high jump
with a clearance of 6-5 (1.96). He has 3,006 points through four
events and was able to take the lea as Miami's Kevin Dwyer did not
clear a height. Dwyer entered the MAC Outdoors ranked seventh in
the NCAA in the decathlon while Kinsey entered the meet ranked 11th
nationally.
(6:00 pm - Day 1)::
Day 1 of the decathlon concluded with the 400m. Kent State's Mike
Schober ran a field-best 49.06 to take the Day 1 lead with 3,829
pts. Daniel Kinsey slipped to third, finishing Day 1
with 3.685 pts, while Weston Lott is fifth with 3,414 pts.
