Akron?s Stevi Large Places 11th at NCAA Shot Put

After placing runner-up in the weight throw Friday, senior
All-American Stevi Large placed 11th Saturday n the shot put
at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at
Texas A&M.
Junior Carrie Kayes (pole vault) and sophomore Mike
McCall (high jump) also competed Saturday, but did not clear a
height in their first NCAA appearances.
Large, who entered the NCAA Indoors ranked fourth in the nation in
the shot put with a throw of 55-1, had a best distance of 50-11
(15.52) Saturday to place 11th. The Somerset native was the top
Mid-American finisher at the event as Kent State's Nia Henderson
was 14th and Ohio's Bahiyjaui fouled on her three attempts.
Kayes, who won eight of her nine previous 2009 indoor pole vault
competitions including the MAC Championship, missed on her
three attempts at the opening height of 12-11.50 (3.95). She
entered the meet ranked 14th nationally, clearing 13-8.25 this
season.
McCall, who won six of his seven 2009 indoor high jumps
including the 2009 MAC Championship with one runner-up,
missed his opening height of 6-10.25 (2.09). He entered the NCAA
Indoors ranked 13th-t, clearing 7-2 this season.
The Zips will now turn their attention to the outdoor season. The
squad will send student-athletes to both the LSU Relays and the
Stanford Invitational for the opening weekend, Mar. 27-28.
