Men's Basketball Falls At Home To Bowling Green
March 01 | Men's Basketball
In a Mid-American Conference match up of first place East
Division opponents, the University of Akron men's basketball team
fell to Bowling Green 50-46 in front of 3,175 fans on Sunday at
Rhodes Arena.
Covered by three defenders, a short jumper by Nate
Linhart with 3:44 left in regulation gave Akron (18-11, 9-5) a
late 46-45 lead, its first advantage since just before halftime.
But Bowling Green's Brian Moten buried a long-range 3-pointer as
play entered its final minute and the Falcons scored the last five
points of the game en route to the victory.
Darryl Roberts and Nikola
Cvetinovic led Akron with eight points apiece as the Zips saw
their five-game home win streak come to an end. Linhart pitched in
with six points and seven rebounds for UA, which lost for just the
third time in the last 12 contests.
The MAC's second leading free-throw shooting team shot well again
from the line, connecting on 11-of-13 (84.6 percent) of its shots
from the charity stripe. The Zips defense, coming into the game as
conference leaders in field goal percentage defense and 3-point
field goal percentage, allowed BGSU to shoot 21-of-49 (42.9
percent) overall, but held the Falcons to just 27.8 percent
shooting from behind the arc.
Bowling Green (17-11, 10-4) won its sixth straight contest away
from home, staying even with Buffalo (17-9, 10-4), which defeated
Ohio 68-66 on Sunday, atop the standings.
Moten, averaging 16.7 points over his past three games in the
starting lineup, came up big for the fourth-straight contest. His
17 points led all scorers, while Darryl Clements joined him in
double figures with 12.
Both teams struggled offensively to begin the game, combining for
just three field goals over the first 10-plus minutes. Tied at
three apiece, a Steve McNees 3-pointer started a 13-2 run for the
Zips, capped by a steal and 3-point play by Cvetinovic that gave UA
its largest lead of the game, 16-5. But the Falcons responded with
a 19-6 run of their own to take a two-point lead into the
intermission.
Despite the loss, the Zips are 63-8 at Rhodes Arena under
fifth-year head coach Keith Dambrot. UA has won 54 of the last 61
games at home, including 31 of its last 35 conference games.
UA will conclude its regular-season home schedule with a contest
against Ohio on Thursday. Tip time is slated for 7 p.m. EST.
