Conyers Selected as MAC East Player of the Week

AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron men's
basketball player Jimmy Conyers was named
Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the
league office announced on Monday. It is the first time the senior
forward has earned the award and he is the second UA player to be
so honored this season, as sophomore guard Anthony "Humpty"
Hitchens was chosen on Nov. 23.
Conyers averaged a double-double (16.0 points, 12.0 rebounds) and
32.0 minutes as a starter in Akron's two wins this past week,
helping the Zips extend their win streak to a league best five
games. Over those two contests, he combined to shoot 72.2 percent
(12-of-18) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from the foul
line, while averaging 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists.
In Tuesday's 77-65 win over Illinois-Chicago, the Baltimore, Md., native tallied his second career double-double and second of the season, grabbing a career-high and Rhodes Arena record 19 rebounds (also the most by a MAC player this season) to go with 10 points (made 3-of-5 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws) in a career-high 34 minutes. In Sunday's 77-57 defeat of Valparaiso, he scored a career-high 22 points (made 10-of-13 field goals and 1-of-3 free throws), grabbed five rebounds and made a career-high-tying four steals in 30 minutes.
Ball State sophomore forward Jarrod Jones was named the league's West Division Player of the Week.
Akron (9-3) returns to action on Dec. 30 (Wednesday) when it travels to Wyoming (6-6) for a 9 p.m. ET match up with the Cowboys. The Zips then return home for back-to-back games at Rhodes Arena - playing host to Rhode Island on Jan. 5 and facing Bowling Green in the conference schedule opener on Jan. 9. The URI and BGSU games are both scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET tip off.
