Men's Basketball Wins Third Straight, Tops Toledo 70-61

TOLEDO, Ohio The University of Akron
men's basketball team extended its win streak to a season-long
three games, with a 70-61 victory over Toledo on Wednesday in a
Mid-American Conference contest at Savage Arena.
Playing for the third time in five days, the Zips (12-8, 3-3)
defeated the Rockets (4-16, 2-4) on their home floor for the first
time since Jan. 8, 2000.
Darryl Roberts and Brett
McKnight led four Akron players in double figures, each
finishing with 12 points. Roberts went 2-for-6 from the field and
made 6-of-7 attempts from the line in 28 minutes as a starter.
McKnight made 4-of-9 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, and had
three assists in 23 minutes off the bench. Nikola
Cvetinovic had 11 points and Chris
McKnight finished with 10 points and six rebounds for the
Zips.
Toledo had a pair of one-point leads in the opening minutes, but
aside from that Akron led for the duration, going up by as much as
nine on several occasions. The first was a 21-12 margin with 8:43
left in the first half. The Zips led 30-25 at the break, thanks to
a Roberts 3-pointer in the final seconds of the opening stanza.
UT closed to within 65-61 on a Jonathan Amos layup with 1:19 to go
in regulation, but the Rockets would advance their score no
further. Chris McKnight hit a jumper and UA made 3-of-5
free throws in the final minute to achieve the final margin.
Tyrone Kent led Toledo with 19 points, while Justin Anyijong and
Larry Bastfield had 10 points apiece for the Rockets. Anyijong also
had a game-high eight boards in 39 minutes.
Akron shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field, but allowed
Toledo to shoot 46.8 percent (22-of-47). The Zips outrebounded the
Rockets 34-24 and forced them into 19 turnovers, which resulted in
26 UA points. UT had 10 steals.
The Zips continue play against the league's West Division, taking
on Central Michigan at Rhodes Arena on Saturday at noon EST. The
game will be televised by FSN Ohio.
