Men's Basketball Breezes By Bowling Green, 80-44
January 21 | Men's Basketball
Quade Milum scored a career-high 22 points as the
University of Akron men's basketball team stayed atop the
Mid-American Conference's East Division and extended its home win
streak to 20-straight games with an 80-44 win over Bowling Green on
Sunday night at Rhodes Arena in front of 3,803 fans.
The Zips (14-3, 4-0 MAC) connected on 48.5 percent (33-of-68) of
its field goal attempts, which included 18-of-35 (51.4 percent)
from the floor in the first half and an 8-of-12 shooting
performance to begin the game. Milum hit 10-of-11 field goals to
lead all scorers and matched a season-high with eight rebounds. For
the night, Akron's bench outscored the BGSU reserves, 54-24.
Jeremiah Wood added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting
as the only other UA player to reach double-digits in scoring.
Fellow senior Nick Dials dished out a career-high nine assists
and ranks ninth on the school's all-time list in that category with
250.
Brian Moten's 13 points led Bowling Green (7-9, 2-2), while Chris
Knight totaled a game-high nine rebounds. Akron held the visitors
to just 33.3 percent (16-of-48) shooting and scored 26 points off
21 Falcon turnovers. The Zips set team season highs in steals (11)
and field goals attempted (68), leading by as many as 39
points.
UA jumped out to an early 18-2 lead, capped by a 3-pointer by Steve
McNees with 13:43 left before halftime. Akron would extend the
lead to 17 points, 26-9, on a basket by Brett
McKnight with 9:30 remaining in the first half. The Falcons did
not reach double figures until a lay-up by Nate Miller (seven
points) at the 7:10 mark. Another two-pointer by Brett
McKnight would give the Zips a 27-point lead, 41-14, their
largest advantage of the half.
The Zips are now 50-2 at home under fourth-year coach Keith
Dambrot and have won 41 of their last 42 contests at Rhodes
Arena. The 14-3 record is the best start during his tenure,
surpassing the 2005-06 team that began the season 13-3. Sunday
night's win also made it the best start in the program's Division I
era, which began with the 1980-81 campaign.
UA owns a combined margin of victory of +17.1 ppg in its 10 home
dates (10-0) this season, and have now scored at least 71 points on
seven occasions. The 36-point win was the second-largest margin of
victory in MAC play for the program. Overall, the Zips have emerged
victorious in 23-consecutive league games at home, dating back to a
57-54 loss to Kent State on Feb. 9, 2005.
Akron will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to MAC
East Division rival Kent State for a 7 p.m. EST contest. The next
home game for the Zips will be Wednesday, Jan. 30 against Toledo.
Tip-off for that contest is also scheduled for 7 p.m.
