Akron Puts Six on T&F Academic All-MAC Team
May 22 | Track & Field
AKRON In addition to turning in the best performance in school history at the 2007 Mid-American Conference track & field championships this season the women winning and the men coming within one point of its first title, the University of Akron had one of its best showings on the Outdoor Academic All-MAC team with a total of six honorees, including senior Jessica Bright, senior Corine Gavin-Hall, senior Lisa Ravn, senior Rachel Zubricky, senior Randall Hafner and sophomore Weston Lott.
Bright (Madison, Ohio/Madison HS) has posted a GPA of 3.717 in education. This makes the third time Bright has been named Academic All-MAC, adding the distinction for the 2007 indoor season and the 2006 outdoor season. Bright, who set school records in the 55 and 60 meter hurdles during this past indoor season, took third in the 100 meter hurdles at this year's MAC Outdoor championships, setting a school record and qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional with a time of 13.75. She also won the 100 meter hurdles at the Northeast Ohio Quad with a time of 14.33 and placed second behind Cincinnati's Monica Hundley, at the All Ohio Championships.
Gavin-Hall (Canton, Ohio/Canton McKinley HS) has a GPA of 3.205 in mass media communication. Heading into the 2007 MAC Outdoors, she owned the league's best time in the 100 meters (11. 72) and the 200 meters (23.60). At the MAC Outdoors, she scored in both the 100 (placing fourth) and the 200 (placing third) to help Akron win its fifth MAC track & field title during Gavin-Hall's four years, tying a league record. A winner of six races this season (three in the 100 and three in the 200), Gavin-Hall will be competing in both the 100 and 200 at the 2007 NCAA Mideast Regional this weekend.
Ravn (Canal Winchester/Canal Winchester HS) has a 3.57 GPA in nursing. She placed third at the 2007 MAC Outdoors in the high jump, scoring in all eight MAC Championships over her career. Ravn posted an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 5-8.75 (1.75) in the high jump to place third at the prestigious Drake Relays. Later, she bettered that mark with a leap of 5-10 (1.78), which ranks 12th-best in the region, in her final home meet at the Campbell/Wright Open. Ravn was recipient of Akron's "Director Award" for the female track & field/cross country teams, which goes to the person who "gave exemplary performances both in competition and in the classroom. In addition, that person displays excellent leadership skills and is a team player in every way. Finally, the individual frequently serves both the University of Akron and the community. That student-athlete is an all-around asset to the University and the Zips."
Zubricky (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) has a 3.840 GPA in sport & exercise science. She placed second, behind teammate Larisa Arcip, in the 1500 at the MAC Outdoors to earn all-league honors, while adding a third-place finish in the 800. Zubricky will be competing at this weekend's NCAA Mideast Regional, qualifying with a time of 4:26.99 in the 1500. With Akron's women winning the 2007 MAC Outdoor Championship, Zubricky will go down as the first student-athlete in MAC history to be a part of six league team titles; cross country once, indoor track three times and outdoor track twice.
Hafner (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS)has a 3.545 in education, earning his sixth Academic All-MAC honor. He is one of just three athletes in 2007 to qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the shot put, discus and hammer throws. In his first meet of the 2007 outdoor season, he was tabbed MAC Field Performer of the Week for posting NCAA regional standards in the three events. Hafner was recipient of Akron's "Director Award" for the male track & field/cross country teams.
Lott (Berea, Ohio/Berea HS) has a 3.567 GPA in mechanical engineering. He placed seventh at the 2007 MAC Outdoors and, at the Campbell/Wright Open, turned in the Zips' best performance of the season in the pole vault (15-7).
