Akron Sweeps MAC Male Track & Field Honors
April 25 | Track & Field
AKRON, Ohio The University of Akron men's track and field team, after winning the All Ohio Championships this past weekend, swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards as Mike Meditz was named MAC Male Track Athlete of the Week and Cadeau Kelley was named MAC Male Field Athlete of the Week.
Meditz, a senior from Brunswick, Ohio, laid claim to two school records at the All Ohio Championships. First, he broke his own mark in winning the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.51. Then, in the final event of the day, Meditz ran the lead leg of the 4x400 relay, which set a school record with a time of 3:10.71. Not only did that break a five-year-old school record, but the Zips' second-place finish in that race propelled them to the team win over host Cincinnati.
This is the second time this season Meditz has established a UA mark in the 400 hurdles. His time of 51.51 ranks 26th in the nation, fifth in the Mideast Region and tops in the MAC.
Kelley, a junior from Cleveland, Ohio (John Marshall HS), also played a key role in the Zips winning the All Ohio Championships, winning both the long and triple jumps at the annual meet. His winning leap of 24-3.5 (7.40) in the long jump was an NCAA Regional qualifying mark and one foot better than second place (beating his teammate Johnny Adams). In addition, hiss winning leap of 48-6.25 (14.79) was nearly two feet better than second place (Ohio State's Brandon Cathcart) and Kelley's best effort of the 2007 outdoor season.
Kelley ranks 45th in the nation in the long jump, 18th in the Mideast Region in the event and leads the MAC in the event.
Akron will return to action this weekend with a portion of the squad heading to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays and another traveling to Hillsdale, Mich., for the GINA Relays.
