AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron
Department of Athletics will hold a celebration to recognize its
men's basketball team's Mid-American Conference East Division
Championship season on Monday, March 26 at 7 p.m. EDT at Rhodes
Arena.
Admission and parking for the event is free, and the first 500 fans
to come through the turnstiles will be treated to free pizza and
soft drinks from Papa John's and Pepsi. Free 2006-07 team photos
will be handed out (while supplies last), and the event will also
include the playing of a season highlight video.
Fans will hear remarks from head coach
Keith Dambrot along with
selected Zips players, and the entire team and coaching staff will
be on hand for an autograph session.
The complimentary food, drinks and team photo prints are being made
possible by the generous sponsorship of the department's Varsity
"A" Association.
Akron won its first MAC East Division championship since 1998 and
compiled a 26-7 record (13-3 MAC) en rout to falling to Miami
(Ohio) 53-52 on a 3-point buzzer-beating bank shot in the league
tournament title game on March 10. Despite their record and a
dramatic close to the season, the Zips did not receive an
invitation to compete in a post-season tournament.
The Zips' 26 wins tied for the school record for victories in a
season, as the 1971-72 team posted an identical number. Further,
Akron achieved its second consecutive 20-win season (23-10 in
2005-06). The program last performed that feat in 1987-88 (21-7)
and 1988-89 (21-8) under coach Bob Huggins.
Also included in UA's highlights this season was a 13-1 record at
home, with the lone loss being to top-25 ranked Nevada 73-71 on
Dec. 22.
Zips senior forward
Romeo Travis (Akron,
Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary HS) was honored as the MAC Player of the
Year and was also named to the all-league first team, while senior
guard
Dru
Joyce (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary HS) earned a spot on
the conference's second team. Junior guard
Cedrick Middleton (Chicago
Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic HS/Brewster Academy [N.H.]) was
awarded the MAC's Sixth Man-of-the-Year accolade. Travis and
redshirt-junior forward
Jeremiah Wood (Akron,
Ohio/Central-Hower HS) were named to the MAC All-Tournament
Team.
