Tennis Blanks St. Bonaventure

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron tennis
team improved its record to 2-1 with a 7-0 victory over St.
Bonaventure on Saturday at LaTuchie Tennis Center. It was the Zips
first shutout win since February 2005.
The Zips opened play by sweeping the doubles point for the second
time in three matches. Aude Percherin earned her first collegiate
win as she paired with Laura Hemlepp for an 8-0
win at the No. 3 position. UA's first and second doubles teams both
jumped out to 4-1 leads only to have St. Bonaventure (1-2) break
back to 4-3 in both matches. Akron would have none of that,
however, as Jenna Larson and Lindsey
Berry swept the final four games to post an 8-3 win at No. 2,
and Tanya Gombera and Amy
Sherlock regained control and won 8-5 at No. 1.
In singles play, the sophomores led the way as they won Nos. 1, 4,
5 and 6 in straight sets, losing only seven games in the eight
sets.
Alyssa Carlson was first
off court with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6,
Kerry Langworthy finished
right behind her with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4,
Lindsey Berry won 6-0, 6-0
at No. 5, while
Tanya Gombera secured a
6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1.
Jenna Larson and
Amy
Sherlock both won their first sets easily, but their St.
Bonaventure (1-2) counterparts fought back and left both Zips
trailed 6-5 in the second set. Both UA players battled back to win
in tiebreakers. Larson won 6-0, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 2, and Sherlock
won 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 3.
The Zips return to action when they play host Duquesne at 1 p.m.
EST on February 14 at LaTuchie Tennis Center in nearby Stow.
